The 2nd Annual onWORD Bible Conference provided much food for thought. Calgary Pastor John van Sloten of New Hope Community Church (CRC) was the featured speaker, exploring what the Bible says about how God often speaks through means other than the Bible -- notably through his creation (see Psalm 19, Romans 1).
John discussed his recent book, 'The Day Metallica Came to Church', a book that author Leonard Sweet called "amazing", and Dr. Richard Mouw, president of Fuller Theological Seminary, called "reliable and inspiring."
The idea is unsettling in some ways and generated good discussion, but John explored how the church (indeed, even the apostles and Jesus himself) saw God's truth in unexpected places.
Randy Stonehill, a legendary singer-songwriter, led worship and also offered a workshop on the role scripture has played in his life as a public figure. That workshop took place outside on a gorgeous, warm September Saturday. In all, eight workshops and three general sessions took place, and the conference was followed by a concert with Randy Stonehill in the evening of September 24th.
The conference generated media interest from a number of outlets, and resulted in a feature interview on CBC Radio (Edmonton).
