New series January 5 - February 16th

WISDOM LITERATURE

The E P Wahl Centre is pleased to announce the beginning of a new initiative centered on Scripture. On Tuesday evenings, outstanding Bible teaching will be offered at no charge (a free will offering will be taken); pre-register for any evening here.

The first teacher in this new series was our legendary former professor Dr. Willy Muller. Dr. Muller was a professor at Taylor for many years (1964-1990); it was a rich series with a teacher who knows his material inside and out -- Thank you, Dr. Muller! (Check out this short video from the opening night! )

January 5 - February 16: Wisdom Literature, with Dr. Jerry Shepherd, Rev. Neil Gordon and Mary Kassian.

January 5, 12: Dr. Jerry Shepherd will introduce the genre of Wisdom Literature in the Old Testament, with a special focus on the book of Proverbs. What do we mean by “wisdom” in the Old Testament? How can we tell the difference between wisdom and folly (which can sometimes look a lot alike!)? The second session will look at some of the problems raised by the wisdom literature, especially in the books of Job and Ecclesiastes. What do we do when some of the wisdom statements in the book of Proverbs don’t seem to be actually working out? Dr. Jerry Shepherd is an Old Testament scholar and a popular professor at Taylor Seminary. He was a contributing writer for the “The Expositor's Bible Commentary” (Zondervan, 2008).

January 19, 26: Rev. Neil Gordon will lead a journey through the Song of Songs. Often overlooked in Bible study because of its brevity and its subject matter, this scriptural work is a rich view of ancient Hebrew psychology, the nature of intimacy, and the dynamics of desire (either for a beloved or the Beloved). This study will look at authorship, structure, canonicity, and content, as well as the wide variety of interpretations of this work.
The Rev. Neil Gordon is currently Rector of St. Thomas Anglican Church in Sherwood Park and studied at Trinity College at the University of Toronto. He has had a life long interest in the Bible, especially in the Hebrew scriptures and in innovative ways of teaching and understanding the word of God.

February 2, 9: Mary Kassian will discuss one particular aspect of the Book of Proverbs, contrasting wise and foolish women in Proverbs 7. Mary is just about to release her latest book Girls Gone Wise in a World Gone Wild. It's a compelling study of 21 points of contrast, helping you discern the difference between wild and wise: are you are living as a wise person, or have you bought into the lifestyle our culture holds as ideal?
Mary Kassian is an award winning author, internationally renowned speaker, and a distinguished professor at Southern Baptist Seminary.

February 16: Dr. Jerry Shepherd brings the Wisdom Literature series to a close with a look at how Jesus Christ is the embodiment of the wisdom of God, as depicted in the poems, songs, discourses, proverbs and laments of the Old Testament. We will try to understood more fully what Paul meant when he said that Christ has become for us “the wisdom of God.”

Dr. Jerry Shepherd is an Old Testament scholar and a popular professor at Taylor Seminary. He was a contributing writer for the “The Expositor's Bible Commentary” (Zondervan, 2008).

February 23 - March 23: Christ on Trial - a study of the gospel accounts of Christ’s trial before Pontius Pilate. Features Dr. Eileen Conway. (lectio divina)

March 30: The Slain Lamb, featuring Dr. Benno Przybylski. Come and consider the implications of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.

April 6: The Resurrection, featuring Dr. Benno Przybylski. The resurrection of Jesus is of profound significance, and this study, offered just after the Easter weekend, will be deeply meaningful.

April 13 - 27: Spiritual Living, with Pastor Greg Hochhalter of Sherwood Park. Greg is pastor of Sherwood Park Alliance Church, and is an alumnus of Taylor.

May 4 - June 1: Journey through Scripture with the Arts, with various leaders. Drama, film, visual arts, music and photography will all be used to help us freshly encounter and understand Scripture.

June 8 - 29: Parables of Jesus, with Dr. Richard Paetzel. Jesus did much of his teaching in the form of story-telling, and this series will help us understand and apply the key principles of these stories.

Taylor Children's Community Choir

is Now Accepting Registrations!

The Taylor Children's Community Choir is off to a great start -- what a great group of young singers! The registration period has passed for the inaugural semester, but registrations are now being accepted for the Winter Semester. Director Diana Wiens has selected music that will draw from contemporary and traditional styles, and she plans a spring concert that will be an artful, contemplative and joyous celebration of Easter.

The Taylor Children's Community Choir focuses on the musical interests and abilities of children aged 8-12. Each semester will feature Tuesday evening practices (90 minutes), and will conclude with a public performance, one at Christmas and one at Easter.

This music for this choir will draw from the church's glorious history of music, but Director Diana Wiens is committed to making this a joyful discovery of music. This represents a unique opportunity for children from a variety of churches to lift their voices together in a transformative experience, one that could help restore and renew the choral tradition in our churches.

This will be a fun and interesting educational activity -- a great way for children to learn and grow and serve together! And you get all this for just $75 per semester per student (with discounts for siblings). Click here for the registration form which you can fill out and email or print off and return with your payment. (Fields in red are mandatory.)

Taylor's New Name

Taylor is now operating under it's new name and is pleased to introduce its new institutional logo, one that emphasizes the three educational ministries that are part of Taylor. The new legal name for the institution is Taylor College and Seminary. The crest continues to declare 'Pro Deo et Veritate' -- a simple declaration that has summed up our mission for almost 70 years: For God and Truth.

Taylor Seminary, the most prominent part of the institution. is going through a process of renewal and re-visioning, and this fall promises to be very exciting. Taylor College is taking shape as a place where biblical instruction and mentoring will be the focus, and the E P Wahl Centre is planning short-term training events where believers can gain practical skills in a number of areas.

It's a new day at Taylor! We are clearly seeing that, through a season of change, God is at work. Thank you for your continued support of Taylor's mission, developing Christ-minded leaders who make a difference in the world.
